The Town of Mt. Chase
Est. 1864


Incorporated 1864 with the name of the mountain in its Northern Part. First settlement was made in 1838 by Thomas Myrick who was presently followed by his relative Ezra
Myrick and by Francis Weeks, John Crommett, John Fish and David Bumpus. Mt. Chase is the most northern town in Penobscot County.

The lakes of Mount Chase are Upper Shin Pond and Lower Shin Pond they are about 500 acres each - 1-½ miles in length.

In 1860 the population was 260, principal occupations were manufacturing lumber and farming. There were four schools in Mt. Chase at this time.

Today in the year 2000 there are approx. 200 residents in Mt. Chase. Students go to a consolidated school system in Sherman Station. Summer population does swell, whereas there are over 200 cottages on the two lakes.

Mt. Chase boasts of a pub, a flying service, two stores, a campground, gift shop and four Lodges with cottages for recreational use. The primary industry is still Lumbering and Tourism following close behind.
