The Monument was erected on July 4, 1883 to honor the town for being the greatest Banner Town per capita, in the USA.

There were 486 inhabitants and 130 voters including 113 soldiers, 11 draftees, and 102 volunteers. They left 42 children and 19 widows.

The Town of Sherman lost 35 men in battle or prison.
