Sherman Civil War Soldier's Monument and Cannons The Monument was erected on July 4, 1883 to honor the town for being the greatest Banner Town per capita, in the USA. There were 486 inhabitants and 130 voters including 113 soldiers, 11 draftees, and 102 volunteers. They left 42 children and 19 widows. The Town of Sherman lost 35 men in battle or prison. The white marble obelisk lists soldier's names on three sides. The west side is engraved with the following words: " Sacred to the Memory of Our Citizen Soldiers Who Died in Defense of Their Country in the War of 1861 - 1865." Approximately half of the white marble obelisk was broken after being struck by lightening many years ago.
